Semaglutide, a revolutionary game changer for weight loss.
Semaglutide is known as one of the ‘game changing’ weight loss medications for the treatment of obesity. Health care experts and research specialists have labeled this medication as having groundbreaking potential for those who are overweight or obese.
I am sure by now you have heard of some version of semaglutide, such as Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus. These are GLP1 medications. You may have seen advertisements on social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok or even seeing this on the news as the ‘Celebrity Weight loss Drug.’ You might personally know someone who has had success on this medication.
The question is why now, as this medication has been on the market since 2017 when it was approved for the treatment for diabetes by the FDA.
So, what is the hype?
Semaglutide was studied in patients with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30 or a BMI greater than 27 with an associated obesity risk factor such as hypertension or high cholesterol.
Just with the drug alone, patients lost 5-10% of their body weight, but when combined with lifestyle changes (nutrition, exercise, sleep and stress), weight loss of 15-20% was documented!
Additionally, it was noted that semaglutide was able to reset the body’s weight set point, which is unique to this drug class. The weight set point is the weight that your body wants to maintain.
For some people this means that they can eat anything that they want to eat, and not gain weight (their weight set point is low); for many of us, this means that despite our best efforts to change our lifestyle, we are unable to lose weight (or keep it off!) below a certain number on the scale. This can be very frustrating!!
New Research
There is also new research suggesting that taking semaglutide may reduce your cardiovascular risks! In recent studies it has been shown that patients using semaglutide once weekly had decreased blood pressure readings, lower blood sugar levels, and reduced total cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
These are all key factors that can decrease cardiovascular risks. Additionally, a recent study showed that people who took semaglutide for one year had a decrease in their 10-year risk for developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
Because this medication is proving to be both cardioprotective and efficient for weight loss, it is no wonder it is called the ‘game changer’.
Semaglutide is helping to revolutionize weight loss treatment and to help those that struggle with obesity but have been unsuccessful with other weight loss methods, including other weight loss medications.
How does it work?
Semaglutide works for weight loss by reducing your appetite and allowing you to feel fuller faster. Typically, you will also have less cravings for food. Of course, you will see the best benefit with changes to your nutrition, getting the right amount of sleep, reducing your stress levels where possible, and exercising regularly. You can expect to begin to see benefits and weight loss from Semaglutide just 6-8 weeks after starting the medication with lifestyle changes!
Semaglutide is a proven weight loss medication and can help you to permanently fix your obesity. The first step is to determine whether the medication is safe for you; that process starts here.
